Do you ever wonder what happens to trains once their useful life is over? Well a Upshire Primary Foundation School in Waltham Abbey, Essex has found a novel way to utilise them. They had the great idea of using two decommissioned rail carriages as additional classrooms. After a 6 month refurbishment the carriages will be transformed into modular buildings with a classroom and library.
The project is the brainchild of train leasing company Porterbrook, Modular Building Consultants, Network Rail and Taziker. Together they have provided project management, design, planning and groundworks. When active, the carriages ran on the King’s Cross to Edinburgh line, and will now have a new role. The school was only charged a nominal fee by Porterbrook, and the work has been project managed since November 2020 by principle contractor Modular Building Consultants.
Preparations etc for the installation have been carried out by Taziker, including removal of fencing for access. They have also prepared the ground, built shuttering, steel reinforced cages, and installed rails for the carriage delivery. Senior project manager for Taziker, Andrew Clow said: “Our operatives on site have been so enthusiastic and they’ve worked incredibly hard to get this work completed ready for the train carriages to be delivered.”
Network Rail programme manager for Anglia, Jeremy Cox said: “This was a very challenging project but that’s what engineering is all about. We were very pleased to be able to provide support with project management, materials, design and engineering expertise to make the plans a reality. Our staff used volunteer days to enable the project to come to life and provide the children with the additional learning space that they were lacking.”
Claire Kirby, Modular Building Consultants commercial manager said: “This is not a typical project that we undertake, however we are always up for a challenge. We have been astounded by the interest this project has generated in the local community, and the generosity of organisations involved in this project. “
